Dr Joseph Komwihangiro

Dr. Joseph Komwihangiro, MD, is a Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Fellow and a Commonwealth Professional Fellow in International Mother and Child Health. He currently serves as Senior Country Director for Tanzania and Regional Portfolio Director for East, Southern, and the Horn of Africa at Pathfinder International.
Dr. Komwihangiro brings over 23 years of hands-on experience in international health and development programming, organizational development, and leadership within international NGOs, including more than 15 years in senior leadership roles. His professional interests span Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), Climate and Health, Population and Development, Health Diplomacy and Policy Advocacy, Private Sector Engagement, and Health Systems Strengthening.
At Pathfinder International, he has led the implementation of a diverse portfolio of more than 10 donor-funded projects in Tanzania. In his regional role, he oversees Pathfinder’s program portfolio across Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Mozambique, providing strategic leadership and guidance to advance the organization’s mission and impact across the region.
Dr. Komwihangiro holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Pécs Medical University, Hungary, a Master of Public Health (MPH) from University College London, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from ESAMI (Eastern and Southern African Management Institute), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Poverty Policy Analysis from the Institute of Social Studies. He is fluent in Kiswahili, English, and Hungarian.
