Dr. Carolyn Wanjira Muruthi is a biomedical scientist and medical educator currently serving as the Medical Biochemistry Course Lead in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at The Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa. She is actively involved in teaching undergraduate medical and nursing students at the Aga Khan University, having previously taught MBChB, Clinical Medicine, and Nursing programs at Uzima University, and Clinical Medicine diploma students at the Kenya Medical Training College.
Dr. Muruthi holds a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and advanced degrees (MSc and PhD) in Medical Biochemistry. Her academic and research work focuses on the molecular basis of disease, particularly non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes. She has publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, with research exploring the therapeutic potential of natural products and medicinal plants as complementary approaches in disease prevention and management.
A central dimension of Dr. Muruthi’s work lies at the intersection of biomedical science and indigenous knowledge systems. She collaborates with researchers at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), particularly through the Centre for Traditional Medicine and Drug Research, while also engaging with traditional medicine practitioners at the community level to investigate and scientifically validate bioactive compounds derived from medicinal plants. Through these collaborations, she contributes to efforts aimed at bridging community knowledge and modern biomedical research in addressing health challenges in Africa. Herresearch has been supported by competitive grants from the National Research Fund and the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI).
Dr. Muruthi has also actively participated in both local and international scientific conferences, where she presents and engages in scholarly dialogue on biomedical research, cancer biology, and the role of natural products in disease management. These platforms have enabled her to contribute to interdisciplinary discussions and foster collaborations focused on advancing innovative and context-responsive health solutions.
Through her scholarship, teaching, and community partnerships, Dr. Muruthi contributes to advancing conversations on the integration of biomedical science with traditional knowledge systems. Her work reflects a commitment to moving beyond reductionist approaches in health research by recognizing culture, lived experience, and community knowledge as critical determinants of health, and by promoting inclusive, interdisciplinary approaches to strengthening health systems and improving health outcomes in Africa.
