The Africa-FINGERS study is a landmark initiative led by the Aga Khan University Brain & Mind Institute, in partnership with local communities in Kenya and Nigeria and a global network of experts.
Our goal: to translate the proven FINGER (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability) model into an African context, adapting lifestyle interventions to reduce dementia risk across diverse settings.
We are testing whether a structured lifestyle program that includes support for healthy eating, physical activity, mental stimulation, and regular health checks can help protect brain health and reduce the risk of memory problems in older adults.
This program is based on the FINGER model, which has already shown promising results in other parts of the world. It works by addressing several health risks at the same time, since different people face different combinations of risks.
What makes AFRICA-FINGERS unique is that the program is being co-designed with local communities and tailored to the needs of individuals. This ensures that the support people receive is both effective and suited to their everyday lives.
